What is the meaning of Kalari

Kalari means 'Threshing field' or 'battlefield' in Malayalam and Tamil. Mainly Kalaripayattu training is done on these Kalari.
Kalari is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Kalaoorika' which means 'design space ' that is  Designing an area for training.

What is Kalaripayattu?

This is one of the oldest martial arts training. This basically consists of self-defence techniques. Many old books 'Granth' reveals that Kalaripayattu origin is from present-day 'Kerala'. As Martial art is a traditional and ancient art in India, In Vedas we get information that this Kalaripayattu and other martial arts were introduced by Lord Vishnu disciple Parshuram. Kalaripayattu is made from two words 'Kalahari' and 'Payattu'. Kalari means fighting ground or battlefield and Payat means method or art.
Many martial arts have been forgotten by people with time, but this art is still gaining popularity. In Kerala, this is customary, that if children's reaches to the age of seven he has to learn and gain training of Kalaripayattu. The person who teaches this martial art is called 'Guru' and this is taught in schools called 'Gurukula'. 
Many people believe that the techniques were learnt by the hunters in the forest by watching the animals, which means many techniques in this martial art are learnt from animals.
This is said that Lord Shiva 'The lord of time', Mahakal. He is greatest of all Devas (Mahadev), no word can define his power taught Parshuram different martial art forms.
Kalaripayattu is known as the base of all new martial Arts like Kung fu and other martial arts.
When India was a colony of Britishers, they tried hard to eliminate Kalaripayattu and many martial arts so they banned them in India because they thought it might be risky for them and can give power to the rebellions, but Kalaripayattu survived the hardest time and was secretly practised in villages of Kerala.
Now, Kalaripayattu has become the most venerable, esteemed and popular martial art and obviously, the oldest one.
This is like a fortune which we received from our ancestors and should respect it.
